NEED SOME HELP!! My wife has an Aria in which she dropped within the first month and completely shattered the screen. The phone still worked properly but the shards of glass became a little too dangerous so I ordered a new digitizer screen. I replaced the digitizer and all seemed to be right with the world until I discovered that every time and incoming call comes the screen goes black and will not come back until another call is declined or the battery is removed and replaced. I think its the proximity sensor but I am not sure. Does anyone have any ideas? The wife with no phone = Hell for hubby |

Did a hard reset a couple of times and now the incoming calls only work on every other call.
Its obviously a software problem but its confusing the hell out of me...
Any thoughts?

The exact same thing is going on with me. I just replaced my shattered digitizer screen today, turned the phone on and all looked great. I placed an outbound call and, poof, the screen went black. The call went through but I couldn't disconnect. Held the power button down and nada. I was surprised, though, that an incoming call seemed to work normally.
Have you found a solution to this issue?

I haven't totally solved the problem but I am willing to bet your phone will work fine if you use the headphones/earpiece.

I think I have it narrowed down and it's weird. If I place a call from memory, either my directory or missed call list, all seems to work okay. If I manually dial the number the screen goes blank but the call connects. It also just blanked out when I called from my desk phone and answered. Otherwise, the phone and new digitizer screen seems to work fine. Bluetooth didn't make a difference.

YES!!! Why is that? Is this the sensor doing this? Screen goes black if I make a call out or put one in to the phone...and I cannot wake it, hang up, or hear anything. I have to pull the battery. BUT...If I plug up the headset earbud that came with the phone, calls work fine, screen stays on...? I've updated to the latest ROM and this did not resolve. I also tried factory reset...nothing. |

I have this problem on outgoing calls ! i replaced the digitizer screen as well, i figured on my own that the phone goes back to normal when u plug the headphones in !

There seems to be a pattern of the same issue after replacing the digitizer. I for one on my aria replaced my broken digitizer myself and ALL functionality except outgoing calls when dialing the number turns off the screen immediately! I tried plugging in a headset(as one poster stated) and seem to correct the issue temporarily. But once headset is unplugged, screen blacksout again. I tried updating the rom to no avail either. Anyone experiencing the same issue and is able to resolved, please let us know please! Thanks!

Ha. All the clues are there: I replaced digitizer and had the same problems. The proximity sensor doesn't work.
I kept my old digitizer around to show off what an idiot I was for dropping my phone. After I replaced the digitizer my phone worked except for the earpiece audio. I was bummed until a coworker showed me that the earpiece speaker was stuck to the old digitizer.
Anyway, when you're in a call and the screen goes blank, hold the phone up to a bright light, especially close to the AT&T logo (top-right corner). this will turn on the screen again.
The proximity sensor is made up of an IR-LED and an IR sensor. The IR light reflects off your face when you're on your phone. When you pull your phone away from your face the IR sensor doesn't get the reflection anymore (holding a phone up to a bright light probably simulates sunlight. I'm guessing HTC had a failsafe for outdoor use).
The problem is that the IR transmitter is reflecting (or going straight into) the IR sensor. My old digitizer still had a small rubber-foam cutout stuck to it. After I stuck the small piece to my new digitizer it all worked again.
I have attached some pictures of what the light mask looks like (assuming not all of you have saved your old digitizers).

When I replaced mine I did not transfer that little piece. I threw away the old digitizer. What can I use to replace it?

I would try a small piece of black sticky sided foam tape and put a small hole for the sensor. The light from the emitter is getting into the sensor. The missing piece makes sure the sensor only receives light from the front (the light bouncing off your face)
