I’m surprised there are no other postings regarding this subject on this forum! My Aria is not even a month old & is having issues with the proximity sensor, i.e. as soon as I press the CALL button screen goes blank & can’t end calls or anything else with it, and no I did not drop it or smashed the screen!!... much as I would like to now Angry
I suspect there is a reliability issue with this sensor, htc probably going too cheap on this component. I bought this phone on Amazon & am trying to send it back to the vendor for a replacement or my money back. Wish me luck !

I was having the same problem as you George.  I just bought my Aria and was having problems when I dialed a number. The screen would black out and would not let me get out of it by swiping the screen.  I could hear the call go thru and was not able to do any thing with the screen. The only way to get out of the call was to let the call go thru till the end when the other end would hang up.  I eventually figured out that the new cover I put on the cell was the culprit.  It was not designed correctly to fit the Aria sensor, it had a plastic bar covering the sensor.  Once I removed the cover the calls would be fine.......now I have a new cover that doesn't have the stupid plastic bar.

Hope this helps, if not good luck  Wink

Hi guys, just went through a screen replacement on my daughters aria, got done and it just like everyone else, when you dial out or get a call in, screen went black, you hold it up to a bright light and it comes on only in direct light.  After backing up her phone with on the fly backup, and the appbackup mentioned above, we did the hard reset, restored everything, set up the google, the wifi, the facebook, etc.....same problem...by chance we had the old screen read above about the guy with the sensor cover, pulled it off the old one and slid it on the new one by prying it up just a hair and using tweezers to slide it in....still black screen after incoming or outgoing call, she happened to have bought a plastic clip together case with some screen protectors for her phone, put the screen protector on,, no big deal, put on the case and BINGO no more black screen, it covers the little sensor, it is a Phone Effects cover from AEWstore.com, worked awesome and now not even a hint of a black screen....hope this helps, the whole deal aged me 10 years...wow stress...don't forget to gently press it all down for a bit, use a heavy flat book or just steady (flat) hand pressure to get the screen gasket/adhesive and the sensor gasket off the old screen to set....thanks to all the above comments helped me a lot...later... Wink

Hi to all! I've the same problem with my htc gratia (european version of htc aria) and I've a question for you: I noticed that if I remove my white back cover the Prox sensor issue disappear. Only if I push the right board of the screen, the display turn it on and I can close my calling. All of you that have this problem, what's the color of your back cover? I think that white back cover disturb the IR sensor with is high "albedo"...

I figured it out.  There is a small black rubber piece that goes over the proximity sensor. Mine was still attached to my old screen. It has a small hole in the middle. It needs to be placed over the small, gold sensor. I was surprised that I found it.  Once I placed the piece on, it worked again.

The problem is that the IR transmitter is reflecting (or going straight into) the IR sensor. My old digitizer still had a small rubber-foam cutout stuck to it. After I stuck the small piece to my new digitizer it all worked again.

I have attached some pictures of what the light mask looks like (assuming not all of you have saved your old digitizers).

THANK YOU THANK YOU for the pictures.  Fortunately I still had my old digitizer and the little "felt" like adhesive was still there.  Carefully pulled it out of the old one and placed it on the new one without needing to take the digitizer out again and worked like a charm!  Now I have a fully restored and properly working Aria.  Thanks again! Cool

Thanks for the help. I also replaced my screen, but threw away the cracked screen before I made a call and found that 1) my phone speaker was replace backwards and 2) I didn't take the proximity sensor foam cutout from the cracked screen.

To solve this I disassembled the phone again and turned the speaker around. Then with a few tries using sharp hair scissors, cut a piece of foam tape used for sealing windows and doors. The piece was just big enough to fit in between the two sensors described above, separating the two. The piece was a rectangular block about 2mm x 10mm x 4mm high. The replacement glass has two spots for each sensor. The weather stip foam tape has adhesive on one side so I could stick it on the glass inbetween the two sensor spots. It worked.

The proximity sensor is made up of an IR-LED and an IR sensor. The IR light reflects off your face when you're on your phone. When you pull your phone away from your face the IR sensor doesn't get the reflection anymore (holding a phone up to a bright light probably simulates sunlight. I'm guessing HTC had a failsafe for outdoor use).

The problem is that the IR transmitter is reflecting (or going straight into) the IR sensor. My old digitizer still had a small rubber-foam cutout stuck to it. After I stuck the small piece to my new digitizer it all worked again.

Hi Guys,
I joined just to say thanks for all of the help. I had bought another phone for parts, plus all of the tools and was still about to ditch it until I saw your feed. I have 1 addition to your post. On the chassis of the phone, there are the 2 sensors you spoke about, the one towards the centre of the phone seems to emit the light and the one on the outside seems to receive the light. I put a piece of 'felt' from my old screen onto the new one and it did not help. It seemed that the screen was still 'hanging' out a bit more than it did before I replaced it. Then I put my case on it and it fixed it. I think the link below is the case;
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-Silicone-Case-HTC-Aria-G9-2-Screen-Protector-/190553451499?pt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item2c5ddeebeb

Furthermore when I was packing up I found a piece of silver coloured foam, round, about 1-2mm in diameter. I pulled the phone apart again and simply slid this between the 2 sensors, to separate them. Works great, even without the case.

Thanks again guys for your help.
