Maybe we should threaten to do them like China did if the release isn't delivered soon! Wink

The move is said to start with the next iteration of the Android OS, code-named Froyo, and will continue through Gingerbread (yes, the Android team names each OS version release after a desert).

ROFL, I now have mental images of 40 yr old, 350lb+ guys who live at home with mommy and with the local Chocolate Factory on speed dial plugging away at the 2.1 OTA....  Cheesy

The article makes a valid point. Android is so split over all these devices. It makes it hard to give one encompassing user experience like say....the iphone.

But i think that Google has a method to their madness. These older versions are the ones that can be rooted and modified. To some people that is what they want to do, so there is a distinct niche market available to them.

But in my case, with modding and rooting, i am just not that interested in possibly ruining my $500 device. And a lot of people feel that way too.

So its a torn market, making it hard for Google to implement newer versions of android to those older devices.

You also have to look at it this way, would you install Windows Vista on an old Pentium II machine? <--psst its rhetorical

The older phones need more attention paid to them to make the newer versions of the OS work properly, theres been a steady incline of devices getting 2.1 compared to other versions of Android, in time everything will be closer to up to date, but after a certain point, the older devices will be SOL, simply because their hardware won't be able to keep up. Thats just how it goes. As for comparing it to the uniformity of the iPhone experience.. well yeah of course theirs is the same across the board, but they all have the exact same phone. As time moves on, you're going to notice that Apple is going to start having this issue, starting with OS4.. the old iPhone 2G is going to get left in the dust more and more with newer updates and devices. Thats how tech works, I hate that they've coined this term for use to make Android and Google look like they're doing something wrong. Especially the mac fanbois.

I would contend that they are doing something wrong. Which is to obfuscate software support. Honestly If I see on the box of StarCraft 2 the video card requirements for it I can understand (as long as I'm vigilant) what I need to play it. It took me forever to find what was wrong with the HTC Aria. The list on the side of the SC2 box came about after years of complaints from consumers that forced Software makers and Hardware makers to be clear about "Technology moving forward". And it feels like that's being passed on by because neither the phone carriers, phone makers and google can't seem to get on the ball. Whether that's because of greed or ignorance it's my opinion that google should step up. Regardless of my other feelings for video card makers they at least try hard to make sure the consumer knows and works with the pc game makers.....
